Join the Millcreek Arts Council at Millcreek Library for a reception honoring the Salt Lake Eastern Art Club. The event will be held September 8. From 5-6 PM artists will be demonstrating Chinese Calligraphy. From 6-7 PM we will host a reception with the artists. Music will be provided by Koan Laross and light refreshments will be served.
September 29 is the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival in 2023, also called Moon Festival. It is the second most important festival in China after Chinese New Year. It is also celebrated by many northeast and southeast Asian countries. It’s a celebrating time for harvest and family reunion, a little like Thanksgiving.
The Salt Lake Eastern Art Club presents traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting artworks in this exhibit. Chinese painting artists use their brushes, ink, colors and water to depict lovely animals, beautiful flowers, mountains, and harmonious scenarios. Chinese brush calligraphy pieces are done by 14 students from the 4th to 12th grades in Utah.
Traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting are both fine and folk arts, and enjoyed by diverse populations. Students in China learn these art forms at young ages; some practice it continuously into their adult lives; many seniors do Chinese calligraphy and/or painting as meditation, one of their daily healthy activities. For example, the most senior artist in this exhibit is 91 years old. Our artworks express our good wishes to you for prosperous lives and all families in Utah. Koan Laros began his musical journey at the Open Classroom in 2014, at just 8 years old. There, he began taking classical guitar lessons from Eric McKenna Spreng, who remained his guitar teacher until the summer of 2022. Currently, he continues to study with his new teacher, Troy Lennerd.
For many years, Koan patiently practiced his guitar-playing skills and absorbed much music theory. Since then, he has been practicing classical pieces by Bach, Tarrega, and others, and has begun to compose his own music.
